Sri Lanka Triangular Series India vs Sri Lanka match news

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

India faced hosts Sri Lanka in the third ODI of the triangular series that also involved New Zealand. India suffered a massive 200-run defeat to the Kiwis in the first game, while the hosts squeaked past the same opponent by three wickets in the second match. Those results seemed to indicate that Sri Lanka would be a tough prospect for the demoralised Indians at Dambulla Stadium. However, the Indians turned the tables on the hosts, with an easy six-wicket victory – even earning the bonus point on offer by virtue of their far superior run rate.

The hosts batted first in this encounter, with Upul Tharanga and Tillekeratne Dilshan opening. Tharanga, who was productive in the previous matches, did not trouble the scorers – bowled by Praveen Kumar for nought. Kumar Sangakkara (2) did not survive very long, nor did Mahela Jayawardene (4); Sri Lanka was 23/3. That turned to 44/4 when Thilan Samaraweera fell in the 13th over.

Things looked bleak for the hosts, but opener Tillekeratne Dilshan batted resolutely as wickets fell at the other end. When Dilshan (45 off 62 balls) departed, Sri Lanka was in real trouble at 82/5. Twenty-one runs later, the home side was 103/7 and in danger of suffering an ignominious defeat. Suraj Randiv (43) and Nuwan Kulasekara (22) restored the innings with their lower order contributions. India eventually dismissed Sri Lanka for 170 runs in 46.1 overs. Off-spinner Pragyan Ojha (3/36) was the main wicket-taker for India; Kumar, Sharma and Jadeja took two wickets each.

In reply, India adopted a cautious approach, with Dinesh Karthik and Virender Sehwag trying to negotiate the bowling of Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara. First-change bowler, Angelo Matthews, got the breakthrough when he had Karthik caught at third man. The Indian opener only scored 10 runs off 35 balls. India was on the back foot after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were back in the pavilion without troubling the scorers. From 32/3, India recovered to 91/4 after Suresh Raina contributed 21 runs to a 59-run partnership with Sehwag.

The dangerous Sehwag did the bulk of the work for India. His performance was the difference between the two sides on the day.The attacking opener scored 99 runs off just 100 balls to lead India to victory with 93 balls to spare. MS Dhoni was unbeaten on 23. Suraj Randiv bowled a no ball that denied Sehwag a century, but he could not deny the opener the player of the match award. This result meant that all three sides had one win and one defeat after three games.

Virendra Sehwag was declared Man of The Match.
